User Requirements and Economical Concepts for Digital Cinema

The implementation of digital workflows is closely linked to the economical parameters which apply to a specific application area. As an example, film and video archives have not yet moved to digital, since the current analogue solutions - though limited in quality and having operational drawbacks - still better serve the business case of their respective owners.

The main objective is the design and evaluation of digital workflow options for the digital cinema chain and the rich media archive application in order to pave the way for an efficient digital technology roll-out.

The focus is to screen, analyze and compare user requirements and system concepts for existing analogue and new digital workflows. An important parameter in that respect is data compression (such as layered compression schemes) and the relative performance of digital workflows based on the compression scheme.

Three important value chains concerning cinema business are evaluated:

  • Digital Cinema (traditional and digitized blockbuster cinema in best quality),
  • Electronic Cinema (the combination of digital technology and additional alternative content like advertising spots, live-events...) and
  • Rich Media Archives (new concepts and workflows for digital archive and retrieval).

The methodology for this research activity is largely based on a structured analysis of current and future user requirements. For this purpose a significant number of players from across the respective value chains will be involved in the analysis and design process.
