Implementation and Evaluation of Layered-Scheme Compression
Compression for Data Acquisition
These work packages are focussed on the implementation of a hardware-based layered scheme compression
for the data acquisition of digital cinema content. Concerning motion pictures for cinema, quality of
the acquired images is the most important request of the film industry; The main reason for that is that
the postproduction needs a big headroom and additionally for special effects and conversions to other media.
Test Implementation of a Hardware-based Layered Scheme Compression Encoder
The objective of this activity is to design and implement a hardware based layered scheme encoder with
real-time capabilities. An optimised layered scheme encoder will be realized, which can handle the data rates
of the latest digital camera generation. A mixed FPGA/Microcontroller approach will be used.
This will lead to an efficient workflow for all data sources (film scanner and digital cinema cameras) directly
into the postproduction environment.
Portable Fieldrecorder with integrated JPEG2000 Compression
A portable data storage based on the specification and requirement set forth by the needs of professional users.
Aside from performance issues, usability aspects such as durability, handling and operating conditions need to be
addressed. Finally, the definition of appropriate interfaces to accommodate continuing developments in the field
of digital capture is essential. This should include not only the electronic specification but should also describe
the mechanical configuration of the interface as required by the application.
Together with the hardware based encoder the data storage will build an unit, which can be used as field recorder.
Compact size and good handling on the set will be considered. The replacement of film cameras by digital cinema cameras
will be available.
