Assessment and Evalution of Image Quality

It is very widely agreed that the movie experience in future Digital Cinemas must exceed and be more compelling than the current one using projected print film. Only by this means will it continue to deliver a clearly differentiated quality experience above that in the home cinema environment, and maintain cinema as the prime location for consumers to enjoy motion picture viewing. Therefore, the image quality of compressed movies needs to be assessed in an accurate and quantitative way.

In order to do this we will evaluate selected scenes in a typical cinema environment using a high-end Digital Cinema projection system, which has been carefully characterized and meets the main requirements as drafted by the relevant standards organizations, such as the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).The image quality of compressed test sequences using both subjective and objective methods will be evaluated. For example, a subjective test method is to compress and decompress an original test sequence according to a specific procedure, e.g. JPEG2000 with certain set of parameters. The decompressed sequence is then directly compared to the original sequence to determine the level of degradation. Results from these tests will provide valuable feedback to determine which levels of compression are acceptable in certain applications, such as Post Production and Exhibition.
